Third Internet Connection in Spokane 08/01/07 12/01/07

DIS must establish a third internet connection in Spokane WA. The objective of the project is to purchase a third internet router and design a backup BGP connection to the internet. Key deliverable were installation of the router, and development of a bgp configuration capable of backing up to the internet routers in Olympia if they became unavailable. The device was purchased, configured and installed without service disruption. The project was a success.


BGP Default Routing External to Internal for disaster recovery 03/01/08 01/01/09

As a part of the State's Network Disaster Recovery strategy, DIS requires a dynamic default route from the Internet. One default route is advertised via the Olympia ISP connections, the other is advertised via the Spokane ISPs. The objectives is to prioritize the route route received by the Olympia ISP, and to use the Spokane Connection as a hot standby path to the Internet. The hot standby route is to be used only if both Olympia routers (4 ISP connections) fail. The design and deployment were successful. The project was a success.

Dynamic BGP Routing from Inside to Outside 10/01/09 01/07/11

DIS requires a BGP policy allowing approximately 1000 internal networks to be dynamically advertise to the internet. The project objectives are to identify networks that can be converted with a high probability of success, filter unwanted advertisements. The DIS MPLS network uses an unassigned public BGP Autonomous System ID for internal traffic. Preventing the advertisement of that network to the public internet is a critical design element. Completing this project will remove administratively burdensome static routing between our DMZ and the internal networks. Key deliverables are, elimination of routing black holes attributed to static routing, dynamic path calculation to the internal network, user friendly templates for the operations team. The project was successful. A 2nd project was begun to implement the strategy for additional networks.

 

DOT Second Internet Connection 11/01/09 12/22/09

The Dept. of Transportation (DOT) is a DIS Internet customer without adequate fault tolerance and insufficient bandwidth. The objective of the project is to redesign internet connections so geographic as well as hardware redundancy available. An additional requirement is to provide transport speeds up to 500 Meg/sec. Key deliverables are a design proposal, implementation of the design and minimal impact to internet connectivity during the change. The design was accepted and implemented. The project was a success.
